Cautious optimism as unemployment falls

Unemployment figures show a drop of 51,000 to 2.61 million in the three months to April, which gives a jobless figure of 8.2%, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The ONS also said that there has been a drop in unemployment figures across all age groups apart from those over 65, and the increase of those in work has been spread evenly over part-time and full-time jobs.

Although this is welcome news, caution is still the keyword when it comes to getting too excited. Employment Minister, Chris Grayling is happy with the decrease in unemployment but says, “I remain cautious over the next few months, given the continuing economic challenges we face.”

While other key figures agree with the caution, they also feel that the Government needs to be more proactive. Brendan Barber from the TUC said, “The Government must invest in jobs to get the economy growing again.”
