Have you received a Tax Fine Notice in error?

Roughly 12,000 people in the UK who had been told that they are no longer required to fill in their self-assessment tax forms now appear to have been sent these penalty notices in error. The letters were sent by HM Revenue and Customs, and came after the new £10 daily fine which now occurs for non-filing of self-assessment tax forms.

Those who were affected by this were told that they no longer have to complete the forms, because their tax bills could now be dealt with using PAYE instead. HMRC has apologised for this widespread error.

Every year, millions in the United Kingdom fill in their self-assessment tax forms, and the deadline for online returns this year was February 2, whilst paper returns need to have been submitted by the end of October. Failure to submit a form when necessary will result in a reminder letter being sent to you in February or March.
